Whenever I see a steamer trunk at an antique shop I can’t help but think about what a process travel used to be and how rarely people did travel.
When you have to pack so much and it takes so long to get where you want to go it was easy to see why travel for pleasure was so limited and often limited to the wealthy classes.
I often wonder whose trunk it was and in the back of my mind I think of Brooke Astor’s late husbands family traveling to Europe for the summer.
Back packs and carry on luggage just do not have the same allure of elegance. But they do allow travel to be much more democratic, at least in coach

Maybe the steamer trunk gets more attention than it deserves. I like to believe there have always been people who travel light. Nothing more than a small suitcase. The bedroll tied behind the saddle. Bindle over the shoulder, etc.
However I think you’re right about pleasure travel being out of reach for all but a select few until recently. The travel I mention above would likely be for work, or war, or survival…
